Project goals were to create a series of twelve black & white 8.5x11" works using a scanner and/or copier.
The project methodologies are based on an excerpt from Original Xerographies by Bruno Munari.
A found object was used to create the works through using a scanner. The found object is transformed into new and unexpected compositions by moving, layering, bending, and warping the object across the scanner to create the results.

Process
I first began the project process by finding a series of classic games from Rolling Hills for only 75 cents. The original games have a really lovely nostalgic quality with the typography and overall aesthetic, so I felt these games could yield some very interesting results. I gravitated toward the Tic Tac Toe game most strongly (I think in part due to the grid on the game board and the graphic quality of the game pieces). I then came up with some sketches for how I could move the pieces across the scanner. I started with the sketches as a guide for my movements, but I quickly let intuition and experimentation take over.

Tic Tac Toe Series
Below are the final twelve works that are submitted for the class assignment.
A total of 96 scans were created and narrowed down to the final twelve.

Although the project goals were simply to create unique compositions witht the scanner and the found object, The Tic Tac Toe series began to take on a narrative quality between two parties that must interact yet are in direct opposition to each other. I thought of this in terms of a romantic relationship at odds— emphasized through the shifting power dynamic of the two shape types, the back and forth of playing the game, and the double meaning of hugs and kisses represented by X’s and O’s. An unsettling and subversive undertone is created through the manipulated movements across the scanner.

Bingo Series
After experimenting with the Tic Tac Toe game, I then began to experiment with Bingo. I really loved these six compositions that came out of the experimentation process. I ultimately decided to stick to submitting the Tic Tac Toe series for the assignment as I felt I was getting more range and meaning from those compositions.

Just for Fun
Before the class set out on our own scanner experimentation process for Project 01, we made a few fun self portrait scans on the first day of class. These were my top three from my set. I also love how when the color mode is activated for the scanner that the colored light shows in the final version of a scanned black and white image.
