LMNO Beasts

Project goals were to create unique creatures through typographic manipulation. This project taught students about typographic anatomy and the expressive power of different typefaces.

The project is comprised of two phases:
    LMNO Beast Creation
Trading Card Creation for the different LMNO Beasts

LMNOBeasts™ is an ongoing research project and sophomore level graphic design assignment created and taught by Todd Maggio. Learn more about his work here.

Original Designs

LMNO Beast Creation

The first phase of the project was to create four different LMNO Beasts. Each of the LMNO Beasts is created with different letters and symbols from a particular typeface family. The letters and symbols are proportionally scaled, rotated, reflected, and cut to create the compositions.

Trading Cards

Specimen Card Creation

The second phase of the project was to create trading cards for the LMNO Beasts. I chose to create trading cards with a specimen/informational style approach. This style showcases how each of the LMNO Beasts are formed by highlighting the individual letter and symbol elements.

The style is inspired by Pokémon cards and includes skill level stats, an index number, and a brief description about the LMNO Beasts. I chose to pick a single accent color for each of the LMNO Beasts that could relate to their habitat or personal traits. Each of the colors is highly saturated and adds to high contrast design.

Printed cards ready for mounting.
