I had the opportunity to teach an Illustrator Basics class with Parish Design Co. over the summer in Minden, Louisiana. The items below showcase the prep-work I created for the class and some of the students’ composition examples. Many of the students were first-time users in Illustrator— this gave them great firsthand exposure to Adobe Fonts, Adobe Creative Cloud, and working in Adobe Illustrator to create their very own artwork.

Class Template

The class template outlines all of the necessary course information, instructions, and contact information for Parish Design Co. The template was visible from the PDC website and posted on PDC’s Instagram.

Composition Examples

In addition to the class template instruction sheet, I also created an example composition and a typeface experimentation example to show to the students before they began on their own compositions.
Each letter from the word MOUNTAIN is used to complete the composition.

The same subject matter can transform dramatically depending on the typeface used.

In Class Composition

The composition I created with the students during the class session uses the typeface Adobe Caslon Pro Bold Italic. A combination of uppercase and lowercase letters are used together to complete the composition.

I intentionally chose a very different typeface from Futura PT Book which I had shown previously in the composition example.
Adding in additional elements like grass, flowers, and bees allows for all of the letters in the word BUTTERFLY to be used in the composition.

Special thanks to Parish Design Co. for allowing me to teach this course.
